5 Ways to Focus on Your Personal Growth in 2020

5 Ways to Focus on Your Personal Growth in 2020

Now that we’re in 2020, there is no time like a new year and new decade to start making real, positive change in our lives. One thing that we need to be focusing on is personal growth. Personal growth extends from emotional to mental, social and even intellectual growth. It’s all about being the best version of ourselves so that we can live happier lives and interact positively with those around us.

Personal growth can help us become a more considerate and caring person, which is essential when being an effective leader in the workplace. We want our employees to trust us and confide in us with their issues so that they stay happy at work and at home.

Make 2020 the year that you begin your continuous development of personal growth. With the following five ways to focus on your personal growth, you can start making a change in the right direction to benefit you personally as well as your business and employees. A strong leader with a personal growth transformation can lead their company to success for decades to come.

Set Manageable Targets

If we want to develop our personal growth the best way, we need to take care of our mental health. Overworking can lead to psychological and physical health issues which impact us at work and at home. Stress can be a significant factor in mental health issues such as anxiety and depression while overworking has been shown to cause a 33% increase in the likelihood of suffering from a stroke than those who work 35-40 hours a week.

You need to manage your stress and mental health if you want to develop your personal growth, and a great way to do it is to set manageable targets at work. This can be both for you and your employees, supporting their journey to better personal growth too. You might have one big goal that you want to reach, but make sure that you don’t rush yourself or employees to meet this. Give enough time for the project to be completed with smaller, manageable targets leading up to it so that you can keep track of the progress and motivate yourself and them.

Overcome Procrastination at Work

Procrastination can be anything from talking with coworkers to checking our phones and watching videos. We don’t mean to do it, but we still find ourselves doing anything but work. Not only does this waste your working hours and leave us stressed working overtime to catch up, but it stunts our personal growth.

One British study found that workers spend 122 minutes a day procrastinating. You might think that it’s just five minutes on the phone here and there, but soon enough, it all adds up. Kickstart your personal growth now by cutting down on your procrastinating. Maybe you’re procrastinating because you feel demotivated at work; think of ways that you can make your job more exciting or start working on a project that you feel more passionate about.

This can be a more vigilant issue if you’re a freelancer or entrepreneur; by being your own boss and structuring your own working days, it can become easier to procrastinate without anyone looking over your progress. If you can relate, set yourself daily targets that you must meet, whether you check on your phone several times in the day, as long as you accomplish your tasks, you can be a little more lenient.

Develop New Skills at Work

A great way to develop your personal growth in 2020 is to develop new skills. This will help you develop intellectually and be a better leader in the workplace. There are many ways that you can learn new skills this year; such as taking online courses and even gaining further qualifications. The more you understand about the industry that you work in and the latest trends in the workplace for issues such as productivity and sustainability, the better your brand and employees will be as a result.

Be More Compassionate at Work

There is an emotional aspect to personal growth that we can’t ignore as leaders in the workplace. We need to be emotionally connected to our work and employees so that they trust us and come to us for support. We need to be able to assess when certain situations require us to show compassion and caring rather than more distant logic.

Try and enable the development of your employees’ emotional personal growth, too. Make sure that they’re happy in the workplace by placing their mental health at the top of your priority list. Maybe try having fun Fridays where they can wear casual clothes, and you order pizza once a month for lunch. Hire a therapist to be available to your employees to support their mental health or even just have an open-door policy where they can come to you about any issues that they’re facing.

Attend a Personal Development Experience

Another great way that you can develop your personal growth in 2020 is to attend a personal development experience. To start with, a business development experience can be a retreat where you, or your employees too, can get together at a location to develop on your skills and form a stronger bond. A personal development experience, on the other hand, is for yourself as a leader to help you enhance your skills and network with other people who are willing to share their ideas and learn from one another.

A business development experience with your team may be more relaxed; focusing more on team building than developing new skills. It is a great way to get employees from different departments to build healthy working relationships.
